Finally it´s finished, my new pattern!!!!!
I really wanted to make another pattern from alice in wonderland, but I could not decide. But with the beginning of the new year, new ideas came! So here he is:

D.I.Y. project: Flower crate.

So no crochet project this time, but a D.I.Y project I made last week.

A flower crate!

The idea came, because I have a cat who loves to tip over vases. I love to place little jars with flowers in them on my table, but every morning I found them on the floor. I decided to make something, that was to heavy for him. I think the result looks really pretty.

What do you need?
*wooden crate
*fabric (not to heavy)
*wallpaper paste
*scissors
*3 glass jars
optional:
*waterproof varnish

wallpaper paste, put it in a big enough bowl for you to be able to dip your hands in it.

Step 1.
Cut your fabric into small strips, (15x3 cm) cut also some smaller parts for the corners of your crate and a big piece for the bottom (messure the bottom on the inside of the crate)

isn´t this a lovely fabric? It is a left over and the shape was too weird to actually sew something from it.

Step 2.
Dip your fabric stips into the wallpaper paste. Get rid of the excess glue, buy squeezing it. Wrap the strips around the wood, making sure every bit is covered. Use little pieces for the corners. The large part of fabric goes on the bottom, make sure it´s completely smooth. You could use a brush for this.

Make sure that you cover the corners first.

now leave your crate to dry.

Step3. Leave the crate to dry, with me it took about 36 hours.

Step 4. If you like, apply waterproof varnish. Now you can even place the crate outside!

Step 5. Fill the jars with water and place them in the crate, now put some lovely flowers in there and your done!

It´s the first of october today. So my first halloween decorations are coming out of the boxes. (I always make myself wait with decorating untill october 1th.)

I wanted to hang something cute next to my frontdoor, so I was searching on etsy. I stumbled upon this cute cross stitch pattern by sewingseed
I combined it with little crocheted pumkins from my teenie halloweenie garland

Hi there,

The Octopede Factory (one of my favourite shops on etsy) got this great friday challenge (TOFF)! It´s simple, every week she chooses a theme and you get to design something (a card, a box, or something else) around this theme. So the last couple of weeks, I am exploring the world of steampunk! It all started with the novel Steamed by Katie Macallister!!

Two nights ago, I started to look at steampunk crochet patterns and I found this lacy wristers pattern by KrochetLove. I fell in love instantly. That night I finished the first one, I added some steampunk like buttons and here it is:

Finally I finished my embroidery art!!! I made three little hoops, one with a bat, a vampire and a skull. Besides this I included buttons, several different stitches, little scissor charms, felt, and yarn.

I think you have to be a little weird to create. That was what I was thinking about when I designed these pieces of embroidery art.

So I thought I would have some peace in het house by now. But I thought wrong.

This week the 5 kittens I got from the shelter are big enough to go to their new homes. It´s about time, ´cause they are getting to big. They turned into little monsters the last couple of days.....
Half an hour ago my phone rang. Someone from the shelter asked me, if I could take in 4 kittens who are now 5 weeks old. I just could´nt say no. So when those five little monsters leave, 4 new ones arrive.
Please please be a little patient with me.... The next couple of weeks, will be about kittens I fear. I hope I can squeeze in photographing my new products and designing a pattern, but I am just not sure when they will arrive....

Something I made myself! I took a picture of me and my husband, then I drew around our faces, making sure I highlighted everything I wanted to show on the silhouette. After this I cut them out, traced them onto black paper, and cut again. I think the result is pretty good!
If you want to make them yourself, there is a great book in stores. It has all the information you need to make them plus black and decorated paper! I absolutely loved it!!!!

Not so long ago I told you about second hand shops and how I never seem to be able to find anything there, while others walk away with great finds!
Well today I finally had some luck.
A little big ben clock from around 1960 and it still works!!! I really fell in love with it right away. When I look at it, I have to think about my father, this is something he would have loved.
The other find was a teapot, with cup. I was looking for one like this for a long time, but because everyone wants them these days, normally the prices are way to high. But now I got these both for 10 euro´s which is about 14 dollars! I think this was a pretty good deal and I am really happy! Take a look for yourself and let me know what you think!

charity donations!

The total of my charity donations this year: 90 dollar!! A pretty good result I think.

First of all I would like to thank everyone who bought a pattern this year, because of you I was able to help various animals, by making a donation with the funandfang profits. Today I made one last donation to ´de Mikke´ this is an animal shelter for birds, deers and other animals who live in the wild in the netherlands.

they also take care of my favourite animal, the bat!!!!

My charity project has ended, for now....

As I told you before I am working on some new ideas. Basically this means that besides crochet patterns I am going to sell other things in my shop. The handmade things will contain, felt, embroidery, bats and cuteness. I am working hard to finish the products. Because I am expanding my shop this means, I have more supply costs. I simply can´t afford to give my pofits to charity. I hope these new ideas will be a big succes and I will be able to give to charity again in the future.

I am working om some new ideas the last few weeks. I am really excited about this, but it will take some time to finish them. So no new patterns for a while. But to keep you all busy here, I will show you other projects I have been working on for myself!
A few weeks ago, we decided to redecorate our home. I figured it was time for some new cushions! This is the result!!!

This one was crosstiched by a pattern of grannyknits!!!

I had lots and lots of fabric scraps left, so I decided to use some of them!

This is the card I made for my mom this year. It´s an origami cat. I am not too good with folding papers, but this one turned out real cute! Ofcourse I also made her a little present. I crosstitched a pincushion and attached it to a new embroidery scissors, she loved it!

FOCUS!

Some days my head just seems to explode. I mean I have so many ideas, but nothing really works in real life.
In magazines and on the internet I see people who seem to have it all figuered out. They show us pictures of their clothes and homes, they blog about a part of their life or show us their creativity. And all the while I am thinking, I want it too. So all sorts of ideas form in my head, but none of them seem to be working for me.

I see the most amazing pictures of vintage homes. People who spend all of their time going to second hand shops and markets and come home with some great finds. So okay, I know what I like, so how hard can it be, right? But once I am at the market or shop, everything seems old and dusty to me... When i finally find something I like and have the guts to ask the seller who much it is, it turns out the thing is way overpriced, so I put it down, turn aroud and run like hell.

Fortunately for me, I have a friend, who loves these markets and she is sweet enough to share her finds with me...

Clothes are pretty much the same thing. I mean, in every magazine you see pictures with great outfits, where everything matches. But again I have some problems in this area:
- This is what my closet looks like, it´s just a mess and I can´t seem to find anything.
-I have three cats, so when I finally find some nice clothes and I think I look good, one of them feels like it is time to cuddle and I end up looking like some hairy monster.

Then there are those who blog every day about a subject they are interested in. So I thought, I love cats, they love me (I have prove on my clothes), let´s blog about them. Four weeks ago I got a cat from the shelter, who was pregnant, and now has 5 beautiful little kittens, so the perfect subject right?
Not, I had a little reality check.... Kittens are lots of work, especially when there mother is sick and you have to visit the vet every week. So you have to feed the kittens, clean up after them and make sure they are all there. (They really find the most crazy places to hide). So at the end of the day, I am happy they are all accounted for, their tummy´s are full, their room is clean and they are asleep...... I really don´t have the energy left to blog about them.

And what is left? Creativity. I like to think about myself as creative. And some of the things really work, like my crochet. But I want so much more, painting, drawing, sewing.... Everyday I start something new, but again I never really finish my ideas, because there are so many of them.

That seems to be my problems, to many ideas.... Maybe I just need to focus on one thing, but how do you choose which one, when you have so many interests?

How to stuff your amigurumi

Last year I was a guest writer on crochet spot. I wrote a piece about stuffing your amigurumi. Today I realised I never added it to my blog. So even though it´s a year later, here it is!:

You just finished crocheting all parts of your amigurumi. So now you are ready to stuff them. This is a very important part of your work, because it determines what your finished doll will look like. I want to share some tips to help you get the best result.

First of all, stuffing actually begins before you even start with your amigurumi, by choosing the right crochet hook. You want to crochet as tight as possible, so the chance your filling will be showing through your crochet work is minimum. The tighter you crochet, the bigger hook you can use. For example, I am a very loose crocheter so I always choose a very small crochet hook.

Now back to your finished amigurumi parts. You have to use the right filling. Of course you can buy doll materials like fiberfill in your local shop but I like to use a more budget friendly version, filling from old cushions. I think it works great.

Try to stuff your amigurumi with one piece of filling, instead of adding a piece after piece. If you would add little pieces, your amigurumi would become very lumpy.

For a head or body, try to stuff as firmly as possible, but not overstretching it. You don’t want your filling to start showing through. For legs and arms, be gentle with stuffing, otherwise you could loose your shape.

When the opening of your arm or leg is very small, use something pointy to get the filling all the way down to hands or feet. I always use my scissors for this, but be careful, not to hurt yourself.

Stuff the feet more firmly then the legs, to ensure you get a nice shape.
If you have too much filling in, just pull out what you don’t need.

When you have the filling in, start ‘moulding’ the doll’s parts, it’s amazing what you can do to the shape of your doll.

Now your doll part is finished!

The last tip: Have fun making your amigurumi!

2nd donation

As some of you may know, I work as a volunteer at the local animal shelter. Last week we started talking about how the cats don´t really have a lot of exercise. They just sleep and eat all day long. Some of them are so bored they start fighting. They told me it would be great to have some toys where you can hide some food in. So they would have to work for there food. There are some amazing toys available, but toys cost money. So there it was my second donation! I decided to buy these toys for the cats with the money I made with funandfang.

I also had to buy some cookies for the dogs

I finished my new layout. As you can see I have added pages to the top of the site. This way you will be able to find things much easier. I have also took pictures of my workspace to share with you. My first donation!!!

Hi everyone,

I just made my first donation! I choose to donate to Pieterburen Zeehondencreche. This organisation helps (baby) seals who are sick. They nurse them, untill they are better and they release them back into the wild.
They really need all the help they can get, because this year there are more sick seals then ever.

Spring is really near! I bought some beautiful flowers yesterday and I just had to share them with you!

I have spend all of the afternoon on my balcony. While I enjoyed the sun, I worked on two patterns. A pattern for my etsy shop and a .........FREE one. YAY!

As you might know, I have decided to donate everything I make to animal welfare organizations. Right now I am focussing on the sea. There are a lot of problems with the fish and animals in our seas. We need to help them, so I thought it would be fun to make some sea amigurumis!

Big Update: charity

Hi everyone,

Besides crocheting I have another thing in my life that plays a big role. I am 100 procent vegetarian and I give my time to raise public awareness about animal cruelity around the world. Me and some friends made a dutch blog about the subject. And I volunteer at an animal shelter in the neighbourhood. Because of this I have decided that from january 1st of 2011 I will donate a minimum of 80 procent (maxium 20 procent will be used for paypal/etsy fees) of what I earn with funandfang to animal welfare organizations. When I have raised 20 dollars, I will make a donation to an organization of my choice. When I have done so I will tell you about it through my blog.
I have chosen not to mention this in my etsy shop, since the rules on etsy state you have to write a piece about which organization you will donate to and with me this will vary. I want to support various animal welfare organisations on different levels.
I am very excited about this and I will keep you all posted on the subject!

Last year has been a strange year, we had to deal with sickness and death. But in terms of creativity it was great, I made my own designs and I am selling them on the internet. I met lots of great people and I have my own blog with 129 followers already!!!

The snow has melted, which is a good thing, because my little dog looked like frosty the snowman everytime he came back from a little walk. It is still cold though.....
Just a little update. I am working on some new patterns/products. I am planning to do something for charity, but I am still doing some research.

If you are wondering about the little pregnant cat I told you about earlier...... she is still pregnant! (If you don´t know what the */% I am talking about: I have a little cat from the shelter in my home. When the kittens are old enough they will be given up for adoption.)
I will keep you posted on this too. (just because she is so cute!).

This is her, her name is Raafje, which means Raven in dutch.

How to decrease invisible?

Ever wondered how to decrease without leaving a knot or a gap?? I am going to try to explain it to you. Please let me know if you find this usefull, so I could do more how to´s... in the future.

Decrease!

1. Start by putting your crochethook through the Front loop of the first stitch, DO NOT pull the yarn through the loop, instead......

2...... Put your hook through the Front loop of the second stitch. This could take some practice, twist your hook to slide it through.

3. Now you have the two front loops on your hook and the loop that was already there, take up your yarn and pull through the two front loops at the same time.

4.Now you can finish your stitch as normal. You have now 2 loops on your hook, take up your yarn and pull through both of them. Now you are finished. You shouldn´t be able to see anything on the outside of your work.

This is a trick you need to practice a bit. In the beginning I couldn´t get the hang of it, but just hang in there, because the result is worth it.

Your work will look better and more professional.

I have a little cat in my home, who is about to give birth. I am waiting and waiting and waiting. And when I am waiting I need to crochet! So a new project: Spider in a jar!

Materials:

*empty jar

*black/grey and orange yarn

*little black eyes

*little scrap of halloween fabric

*little orange pompoms, handmade or bought in the shop. I made them with the clover pompom maker

Abbreviations

ch - chain stitch

sc - single crochet

inc - increase

dec - decrease

Finishing

Put the little orange/black round on the bottom of the jar

Make a little hole in the lid of the jar. Secure a long grey yarn to your spider. Take the other side of the yarn and pull it through the hole. Now make a knot, to secure the spider. Make sure he is hanging and not touching the bottom of the jar.

Cut a little piece of halloween fabric and put it over the lid. Secure it into place with a ribbon or use of a string of 70 ch st in black yarn. At the end of the string or the ribbon, secure the two little pompoms.
